EDUCATION
Irish Horse Welfare Trust Horse Projects
IHWT over the last 7 years has run sucessful educational projects with communites, including members of the travelling community, projects in Darndale Dublin, Moyross in Limerick and IHWT has recently co founded the Dunsink Horse Club with Fingal Co Co and Local Horse Owners.
IHWT has developed educational programmes to cover a wide range of areas with regard to the care & welfare of the horse. As a charity we do this with very limited resources and continually rely on support through sponsorship and donations to be able to roll out these valuable training courses.
Currently our Trainer Lesely Jones is travelling throughout the countryside delivering the IHWT programmes whilst promoting equine welfare, structured education in the care and management as well as the welfare of horses & ponies to IHWT /FETAC accreditation. Broadening interest in existing culture and building social skills. Interaction through organised workshops, seminars, trips and events. Improving levels of animal husbandry and in particular knowledge in the care and management of equines which could also assist with entry to recognised courses and employment in the horse industry in Ireland
(Moyross Schools Programme – Jnr Shools Programme with IHWT Certificates)
IHWT has over the last four year been working in Limerick in Moyross changing lives of horses and children and young adults with an interest in Equines. Working with the Garda youth diversion project the IHWT courses have proven to be one of the most successful of the projects. IHWT trainer Lesley works tirelessly motivating each and every one of the participants. Many have successfully graduated the Equine programmes with a Fetac qualification and a greater understanding and love of the horse.
IHWT and Dunsink Horse Club Project
New Dunsink Horse Club logo designed by IHWT & Horse Owners
IHWT working with Fingal Co Co and responsible horse owners in Dunsink came together early January to discuss changing the lives of the equines and horse owners, on the landfill longterm, with the introduction of the first ever equine project management plan. This is the very first of such plans ever to take place in Dublin with regard to Equines.
IHWT and Fingal and responsible horse owners over a two day period rounded up and micro chipped and passported over 70 equines, taking over 20 equines into care. Horse Sport Ireland sponsored the passports and Micro-chipping of all of the equines. All stallions at Dunsink have now been castrated to prevent indiscriminate breeding.

Training for owners and club members, including the provision of FETAC Level 4 training in Stable & Yard Routine. Is now in progress a total of 22 owners are participating in the training. with a waiting list of large numbers for a second course. Further courses are planned due to the demand from the horse club; however these will be subject to sponsorship to cover their costs and urgently need funding to support this iniative. Courses will also be run for junior members during the summer holidays and mid terms.

Development of Horse Site at Dunsink
The site for horses to be kept and managed has been identified will require some development work. This includes boundary treatment, hard standing, some stabling/sheltering facilities, interior fencing and a paddock/trotting area. The key to keeping horses in a smaller area such as this is that there is no grazing provided, the horses are maintained and fed by their owners with food brought in. The ongoing management of the area will be in the form of the now formed Dunsink Horse Club, whose members agree to certain rules and conditions, and whose management will be made up of representatives from the owners, the Council and the IHWT
