RECENT RESCUES
IHWT has over 92 horses and ponies in the Welfare Centre at present. IHWT was founded by Sharon Newsome and Evelyn Branagh over 15 years ago and is Ireland’s only dedicated equine charity. At the Welfare Centre IHWT deal with many rescues most of which are suffering from severe neglect and cruelty. IHWT cases involve the Gardai in many instances. IHWT continues to prosecute where possible, owners for neglect and cruelty, under existing animal welfare legislation.
IHWT was established to deal with Irelands forgotten horses and have a centre that is equipped and dedicated to equines. The cost of running IHWT is over €300,000 per annum so we rely on donations from members of the public to continue helping horses who have suffered.
The lenght of rehabilitation of equines at IHWT will vary depending on injury and the condition of the horse/pony when they are rescued. IHWT has a huge rescue and rehoming success rate with hundreds of horses and ponies rehomed in Ireland, all who would have died through neglect if it had not being for IHWT intervention.
In some cases, decisions have to be made to put an equine to sleep, in order to minimise an ongoing disease or serious complication. Some of the rescue stories you may find upsetting, but we hope you will also find it uplifting to be able to support and follow our work, along with some of Ireland’s most vulnerable equines.
Parental Guidance: We advise all parents are guardians that some of these cases can cause upset.
