BRIGHTSTAR HER STORY: Make A Donation Today to IHWT to save horses

On a  Saturday afternoon the IHWT received a phone call from concerned hill walkers of a horse found dumped and wandering the woods in poor condition.
Without hesitation the IHWT set out to investigate. Coillte came out to open up the barrier to let the IHWT team into the forest where they eventually found her, severely emaciated with a fractured jaw and suffering from horrific leg injuries, the worst in 15 years of equine rescue the charity had seen.
Under vet supervision she was given pain relief and travelled slowly back where a comfortable stable was waiting at the IHWT.
She was treated for numerous problems specifically severe dehydration; it is thought she had no access to water for weeks.  Over the following week Bright Star received the highest veterinary care from two of our top Irish vets and 2 UK vets. X-rays and biopsies were taken of both her mouth and her leg. During examination of her mouth via a high tech scoping system a cancerous tumor growth was found inside which had been left to fester for far too long, it was found to be already at a severely advanced stage.
With every possible avenue explored and no alternative left, a reluctant decision was made, for Bright Stars sake the kindest possible outcome was to put her to sleep.  A unanimous decision was taken that for her last few days she would have the best of everything and as she deserved.. She was groomed, chatted to endlessly and let into the field in the sunshine to spend her last days as a free and happy horse surrounded by other IHWT rescue horses. She thoroughly enjoyed this. .
Bright Star made an emotional and inspirational impact on all those who met her in her short life with the IHWT. She was one of a kind and touched all of us in a special way.
All  the IHWT team did everything to save her but unfortunately as with the others we have rescued and tried to save in the course of our work, it was not to be and Bright Star was given her Angel Wings. IHWT was set up to rescue and care for neglected equines like Bright Star,  to give all horses their dignity in both life and in death.
